The Road to Hana

Are you looking for a possible day trip whilst on your Hawaiian island cruise? Why not embark on one of the most exhilarating drives you will ever take?

The Road to Hana is easily one of the most famous roads in the world, and is a place that you are certainly going to want to visit on your trip to Maui. The road is beautiful and passes along some of the most incredible parts of Hawaii with impressive waterfalls, trails, and more in an idyllic tropical setting. Even those who only have a day to explore the road should certainly take the trip. You will find a wide range of great things to enjoy during the trip, from the beaches along the way to reaching the final destination of Hana.

The road between your starting destination of Paia and Hana is 42 miles along, and on that road, you will encounter a number of bridges and sharp turns, not to mention quite a few other drivers. You want to make sure that you are paying good attention to the roadway on your trip. You will see quite a few beautiful sites along the sides of the road too, including waterfalls.

Along your journey, you are going to find plenty of wonderful distractions to enjoy. You could take a turn that leads you to one of the many beaches along the road, such as Maliko Bay. The beach here is rocky, but you can watch the water. Another place where you might want to spend an hour or so is the Koolau Forest Reserve. At the reserve, you will be able to find hiking trails that can make for a fun little excursion.

Waianapanapa State Park, located at mile marker 32, is another popular destination. It’s only a short distance from Hana and features a gorgeous black sand beach. It is a great place to stop for a bit of a rest and explore.

With all of the different sightseeing opportunities along the way, you are probably going to be pulling over often, hopping out of the car and taking pictures. If you do, make sure that you are not parking in an area that is dangerous to you or other cars that are going to be coming along the road. Keep your common sense at the ready along this road, because you will find that many other visitors do not!

Hana is a small town, and it might not look like it has much to offer. However, it has an airport, some places to dine, and just about everything that you need to enjoy a true and authentic Hawaiian experience.

Some Tips for Your Trip

If you are on a Hawaiian island Cruise it is highly likely that you may only have a day to take the Road to Hana, therefore you are going to want to make sure that you leave as early as possible. By leaving early, you are going to accomplish a couple of things. First, you will be able to spend more time along the road and enjoying the sites and turnoffs. Second, you are going to beat the traffic. The worst traffic along the road is mid-morning and mid-afternoon. You certainly want to avoid the roads at those times. On the way back, you might as well stay a bit later in the evening and avoid all of the traffic that is heading back to Paia. You could grab a bite to eat at one of the local eateries in town, or you could even pack a picnic lunch to take with you on an afternoon hike.

Make sure that you fill up your gas tank before you head out on the road in the morning. You will not find any gas stations along the road, at least not until you finally make it into Hana.
